AT&T Names John Stankey C.E.O. as Randall Stephenson Plans to Retire

AT&T, one of the country’s largest wireless providers that supports a key part of the nation’s infrastructure, named John Stankey, a longtime telecommunications executive, as its new chief executive starting July 1.

Randall L. Stephenson, 60, who has led the company since 2007, will step down from the role, but will remain executive chairman of the board, the company said in a statement on Friday.

Mr. Stankey, 57, became the chief operating officer of AT&T last October. He led the company’s move into the media and entertainment industries after it bought Time Warner, the home of CNN, HBO and the Warner Bros. movie studio, in 2018.
