Four Pakistanis infected with coronavirus

‘Government will take good care of the students’

Four Pakistani students in China have tested positive for the coronavirus, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health (SPAM) Dr Zafar Mirza said on Wednesday.

The news comes a day after a group of Pakistani students in China made a video appeal for their evacuation from the virus-hit city of Wuhan which has been on a complete lockdown. “Their condition is better now. Pakistani officials in China are in constant touch with all the students,” Dr Mirza said at a press conference in Islamabad.

Not revealing the identities of the four students, Dr Mirza said, “The government will take good care of the students who have contracted the virus,” adding that there have no confirmed cases of the deadly virus in Pakistan yet.

Dr Mirza said that they were in constant contact with the Foreign Office, Pakistan’s ambassador in China as well as the embassy there. He assured the students’ families of the government’s support, on Prime Minister Imran Khan’s behalf, local journalists reported .

The fast-spreading coronavirus has killed 132 people and infected nearly 6,000 others in China, most of them in the hardest-hit city of Wuhan, reports said.
